BEVERLY HILLS — When viewers last checked in with “Chicago Fire” firefighter Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney), he was trying to have a baby with Shay (Lauren German) via In Vitro fertilization. In the season one finale, Kelly’s former girlfriend Renée (Sarah Shahi) showed up several months pregnant.
“Shay and Kelly’s plans definitely get put on hold,” Kinney told the Journal during this week’s Television Critics Association summer press tour. The second season will return two months after the finale ended.
“I think he’s a loyal friend and he’s still up for [having a baby] if Shay is,” Kinney added, “but he’s also having this child with Renée, which he didn’t know about and didn’t expect. It’s a case of bad timing for Shay but I don’t think, if she really wants it, that he will back out.”
That means Kelly will have two babies with two different women.
“That will be a source of turmoil for sure,” Kinney added. “It didn’t work out with Renée logistically and he’s accepting the father figure role,” he added.
While things are decidedly complicated on the home front, Kinney said Kelly’s work life will also heat up. Last season he had an underwater scuba diving scene and the actor said he’d like to complete his certification this year. He didn’t go through the full firefighter training, but ended up hanging out at firehouses, watching the Super Bowl and going to hockey games with local firehouses.
“This year [Kelly] is more confident, which is dangerous, but I’ve also got much more of the vocabulary, the vernacular of that world. So I’m more comfortable playing that character, which means we can go even further with the firefighting stuff,” said Kinney.
The second season of “Chicago Fire” is set to premiere on Sept. 24 on NBC.

Taylor Kinney and Jesse Spencer star in the NBC series Chicago Fire, which has been renewed for a second season by the network. As well as a new season of Chicago Fire, NBC have also picked up the spin-off show Chicago PD, which centers on the police department. Taylor and Jesse have both spoken about Chicago PD and the possible crossover between the two shows, “It kind of evolved, so we didn’t know much about it. I wouldn’t say we were in the dark, but there wasn’t anything set in stone,” Kinney explained.
Spencer then added, “Some of the actors, Jason [Beghe] and Jon [Seda], have been a part of our show for the latter part of our season; the idea was spawned through that and came about and everything fell into place. Those guys are great actors, great coworkers and we’ll be working hand-in-hand with them.”
You can see Jesse Spencer as Matthew Casey and Taylor Kinney as Kelly Severide in Chicago FIre, when season two premieres on NBC in the Fall. Meanwhile, Chicago PD will star Melissa Sagemiller, Jon Seda and J.B. Smoove and is also expected to premiere in the Fall.
